The ancient settlement of Pergamon, located atop Kale Hill, was the capital of the Hellenistic Attalid Dynasty. It is an exceptional example of urban planning and monumental architecture from the Hellenistic period.

The Temple of Athena, the steepest theater of that time, a library, the Great Altar of Pergamon, the Temple of Dionysus, an agora, gymnasiums, and a high-pressure water pipe-line system are remarkable examples of this planning and architecture.

Pergamon was renowned for its sculpture school, which produced the Great Altar, considered one of the wonders of the world since the 2nd century BC. The sculptures created by the Pergamon School of Sculpture represent the pinnacle of Hellenistic period art.

Later on, Bergama, the capital of the Asian State of the Roman Empire, became home to the Asclepion, one of the most important healthcare centers of its time and a significant milestone in human history. Throughout the Roman period, the city continued to play a leading role in cultural and scientific life, becoming one of the most important metropolises in the ancient world. Impressive Roman period masterpieces such as the Sarapeion, the Temple of Asclepius, the Temple of Trajan, the theater, amphitheater, and aqueduct showcase the highest levels of architecture, planning, and engineering of that era.
